Description
DYNAMIC GLOBAL VEGETATION MODEL/INSECT & DISEASE INTEGRATION WORKSHOP - Preparation - Leading and Facilitating - Reporting Statement of Work: Two-day workshop bringing together approximately 24 academic and Forest Service scientists to develop the conceptual models necessary to link insect and disease agents to a Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM). Develop conceptual structure to classify insect and disease agents into functional types, similar to the vegetation functional types that serve as species proxies in DGVMs. Create one specific example of each type of agent (likely mountain pine beetle and Swiss needle cast) in sufficient detail to develop a design for creating wroking simulation models for linking to the BIOMAP model. Use plenary sessions and breakout groups led by three Contractor's scientists to develop a conceptual model for the DGVM simulation system, following the organizational principles of the Holling Looking Outward Matrix. The development process includes: agreement on spatial and temporal resolution and extent; description of external driving forces; description of the dynamics and interactions within and among submodels, including driving variables; possible management actions, and output. Products to result from the workshop: (a) Report on the consensus (or state of consensus) about the applicability of the general usefulness of insect and pathogen functional types. (b) Development of a design for including two specific submodels linked to DGVM in sufficient detail to allow modeling team to begin code deveopment. Authority Cited: National Agriculture Research, Extension, and Teaching Act of 1977, Sec. 1472 (7 U.S.C. 3318) (c)(e)
