The technical requirements for the new rope are as follows: The wire rope shall be the standard product of a manufacturer regularly engaged in the manufacture of wire rope and shall essentially duplicate products having been in satisfactory use for at least three years prior to bid opening. Trade designation for the rope is " (thickness) X 3 " (width). New flat rope will finish at approximate thickness of 3/4" and 4" wide (maximum dimensions, including seizing wire used to sew rope, these dimensions are for the "relaxed" or unloaded condition of the wire rope). The final dimensions for the rope in the "loaded or under tension" condition shall be approximately 11/16" thick and approximately 3 " in width. The existing rope drums are 4.0" wide and replacement rope shall wrap onto drums without rubbing of the rope on the inside flanges of the drums when the rope is in a "loaded condition". Wire construction shall be 4 X 19, material type shall be 302 stainless steel (or approved equal). Flat rope shall consist of eight (8) pieces, 4 right lay and 4 left lay. Length of rope from socket to socket (exposed rope, length does not include rope inside the sockets) shall be 46 feet, 6 inches (46'- 6") +/- 1/8" (Thirty six wire rope assemblies are required for 18 tainter gates). Flat rope shall be sewn together with 1/8" diameter, 1 X 7 stainless steel seizing wire. Assembled flat rope shall weigh approximately 2.82 pounds per foot. Minimum breaking strength for rope shall be 83.6 (+/- 2) tons. The manufacturer would be required to submit for government approval, mill certification for all wire component (4 X 19, 302 rope and seizing wire) materials. The completed wire rope assemblies (both sockets attached) would have to be capable of meeting the following tests: load tested by the rope manufacturer to a load of 40% of breaking strength (33.4 tons, +2 tons, -0 tons). The government may entertain variations to the above technical requirements if the manufacturer can prove that the proposed changes would result in a final product capable of performing the necessary functions.
