Description
AFRL Space Experiments & Programs Branch (RVEP) is pleased to announce that it intends to issue a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for its next major space flight experiment in the next 3-6 months. An intensive review of many candidate technologies has been conducted, and two concepts were chosen for our BAA; one or both concepts will be selected for execution. The two concepts are Advanced Missile Warning Sensors Experiment (AMWSE) and the Advanced eXperiment In Orbital Manipulation (AXIOM). AMWSE will determine and characterize the utility of hypertemporal imaging from space. This technology promises great potential for multiple military needs. AXIOM is an experiment designed to demonstrate new uses for advanced solar array technologies combined with advanced Hall Effect thrusters. The AXIOM baseline is for a single high-power, lightweight solar array wing and a single Hall thruster implemented on a small spacecraft bus, though an implementation with two wings and two thrusters may be considered. Extensive orbital maneuvering will be accomplished at altitudes that may range from low Earth orbit through Geostationary orbit. RVEP plans to host a Briefing for Industry (BFI) prior to release of the BAA. The objectives of the briefing will be to acquaint industry with information regarding how AFRL conducts flight experiments, provide additional technical information on the two experiments being considered, and receive industry input. This BFI will be beneficial in determining the basis for the acquisition strategy, which has not been finalized. Further details regarding this upcoming BFI will be posted in the near future as an update to this notice.
