Description

In 2001 the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health convened an exploratory workshop at which considerable agreement emerged among government, industry, and academic stakeholders that a national dietary supplement label database was needed in order to support and enhance research activities. Dietary supplements marketed and sold in the United States are regulated more like foods than like drugs and there is no extensively-populated research database of dietary supplement labels available to serve the needs of scientists, researchers, and educators. A variety of incomplete and fragmented databases currently exist with far less functionality and far fewer data records than what is ultimately envisioned for the ODS research Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD). The Office of Dietary Supplements research DSLD was developed as a prototype and successfully demonstrated, with a sample of 600 dietary supplement labels, to a panel of Federal Stakeholders in May 2009. The Office of Dietary Supplements seeks, through this effort, to populate its web-based research Dietary Supplement Label Database with label data from the estimated 50,000 dietary supplements sold in the United States. This is a pre-solicitation notice for a base year plus four optional years, fixed price contract. A Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued on or about 15 days from this notice.
