Description
The primary goal of the project is to create woody riparian habitat along the Lower Snake River. Skookum HMU is located in Lower Monumental Pool on the right bank at river mile 47-50. The HMU has an existing irrigation system which includes an in-river intake/pump with irrigation pipes. The project would expand the existing system by constructing a new system upstream between the cattle corridors. After the irrigation is expanded, the site would be planted with shrubs and trees in separate contract. The conceptual layout is to irrigate 5 swales along the river between the cattle corridors. The length is approximately 3,800 feet and up to 300' up slope from the river. The project will provide an estimated 40 acres of riparian and 75 acres of shrub steppe habitat. The contractor will be responsible for replacing the existing diesel pump with a new electric pump and connecting the pump to the new electrical service. Electrical power will be brought across the river and near to the site in a separate contract. The amount and type of work for the power hook up is partially subject to where the electrical lines cross the river and where the sprinklers are to be placed. The existing intake is in the process of being inspected to determine if the contractor will be required to repair or replace it. Contractor access would be from the river. All material, equipment and labor would be brought in by barge. It is assumed that there will be minimal effort in preparing the shore for river access. The estimated quantities below are for installing the new irrigation system. These estimates are for informational purposes only. The contractor will be responsible for verifying quantities in the solicitation package. The backfill quantity is a conservative estimate in that this assumes all backfill and bedding material will be imported to the site and that any excess excavated material will not be removed from the site but be wasted on site. An evaluation is underway to determine if the existing materials are suitable for bedding. It is very possible that some of the excavated material will be used as backfill. It is assumed that access to the existing inlet for removal and replacement can be accomplished from the shore. An excavator could be used to lift the old inlet and to place the new inlet. Depending on the distance from the shore and the current depth of the inlet, a working barge may be required and possibly even divers. The new inlet is assumed at this point to be similar to the T1000 inlet from Pump-Rite Screens (www.pump-rite.com) or equal.
