- Description
- DEVICE FOR DECOMPRESSION AND TACTICAL EN ROUTE CARE OF SUSPECTED PNEUMOTHORAX IN COMBAT / AUSTERE SETTINGS The Combat Casualty Care Research Program of the Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) provides integrated capabilities for far-forward medical care to reduce mortality and morbidity associated with major battlefield wounds and injuries. The USAMRMC is seeking information regarding small bore needle/ trocar decompression devices which are capable of providing rapid initial decompression and en route care maintenance of clinically-suspected tension pneumothorax for use by combat medics and medical professionals in the austere battlefield environment. Interested firms should submit a 1-3 page whitepaper (with additional sheets for diagrams as necessary) describing such devices and the concept of use. Information will be reviewed pursuant to consideration for the development of a request for devices to be tested. As such, any descriptions of clinical use or test and evaluation studies will be of use. Both commercially-available as well as proposed designs are considered appropriate. For the purposes of this request for information, we anticipate that devices: 1) Possess an internal bore diameter smaller than or equal to 4mm / 12 French; 2) provide rapid decompression in the event of the presence of tension pneumothorax; 3) possess the capability to remove the needle / trocar while leaving-in-place a flexible, minimally-invasive tube, catheter or other channel capable of occlusion via stopcock or similar mechanism and capable of maintaining or re-establishing patency without repetitive needle punctures, for serial chest decompression during tactical evacuation if clinically warranted; 4) may be utilized in multiple trauma scenarios, including blunt and penetrating thoracic trauma; 5) could potentially be utilized to decompress and temporize a massive hemothorax prior to placement of a tube thoracostomy; 6) capable of being attached via adapter to either luer-tip or Toomey-tip syringe for active manual suction; 7) Can be used easily in a tactical environment with a minimum level of familiarization 8) encased in a crush / break resistant container with non-glare finish in an earth tone color 9) Be of light weight; 10)Have long shelf life, low cost and low cube/weight with minimal space impact on medic bag. 11)heat stable
