- Description
- The previous Request for Information number W58RGZ-RFI-VTOL is modified as follows: 1. Responses are provided to clarification questions received to date. 2. The response date is extended from July 27, 2011 to August 10, 2011. The following inquiries have been received to date. The inquiries are included below as well as the PM-UAS response to the inquiries. Question 1) V. Survivability states, "The VTOL UA must be survivable to support battlefield operations in a medium threat environment." Several definitions of "medium threat environment" currently exist in the DOD community. For example, typical use of medium threat environment refers to the density of threats in a given area, but does not address the type of threat. Can you provide more clarity on the definition of "medium threat environment" and types of threats in this operational context. Response 1: Operation in a "medium threat environment" is expected to be a system level requirement. The specific information requested is not available at this time and is not pertinent to responses requested in the Survivability Section V, items 1 through 7. Question 2) III. Autonomous Operations in 1. Autonomous take-off/landing there is a reference to be able to perform both "(9.) manned & unmanned flight coupled landings". It also states to "(10.) describe the manual / pilot assisted capability of the same functions". Please clarify the definition between "manned / unmanned coupled" and "manual / pilot assisted" functions. Response 2: The definition of "manned coupled" in this context is the coupling of an approach to landing of an unmanned VTOL platform with a manned aircraft, with the manned aircraft as lead. The definition of "unmanned coupled" in this context is the coupling of an approach to landing of unmanned aircraft with other unmanned aircraft. The definition of "manual / pilot assisted" in this context refers to takeoff, landing and recovery with a man in the loop. Question 3) II. Aircraft Performance in 3. Vehicle Performance references "(6.) maximum and gross takeoff weight". There are multiple definitions of each and would like to understand which definitions are requested for this response or if the intent is to reference "maximum gross takeoff weight" vs "maximum" and "gross" individually. Response 3: The intent is to fully describe the capability of the respondent's system. The 6000'/95 degrees F requirement may preclude takeoff at Maximum Gross Takeoff Weight (maximum takeoff weight due to structural limits), thus the capability will need to be expressed in terms of Gross Takeoff Weight for the given mission and ambient conditions. As stated previously, the response date for this RFI is hereby extended until August 10, 2011.
