Description
The US Geological Survey, Navajo Land use Planning Project has a requirement for investigation of the history of extreme events and land use in the Little Colorado River Valley in order to relate landscape sensitivity and ecosystem function to land use and climatic variability. This task requires consultations with Navajo speaking elders in the remote area north of the Little Colorado River on the Navajo Nation. An investigation of land use practices within remote areas of the Navajo Nation requires knowledge and expertise of Navajo language and culture. The contractor must have a PhD in Anthropology and a minimum of 20 years experience. The contractor must be well versed in the Navajo language. The contractor must be an experienced anthropologist and investigator of Navajo cultural issues and Navajo land use practices. The contractor is required to travel to Navajo home sites, senior citizens gatherings and Chapter meetings to consult knowledgeable elderly Navajo residents of the Little Colorado Valley, Navajo Nation, Arizona. Open-ended consultations with these elders will cover a checklist of topics to be discussed and recorded. The results of the interviews will be summarized in a report. This work will describe changes in springs and wells, farming and grazing practices and locations, changes in vegetation for livestock and medicinal use, observed changes in weather patterns, observations of floods, dust storms and other unusual weather-related events, changes in surficial features such as river channel locations and moving sand dunes, and changes in local wildlife. A preliminary report and a final report should be completed by March 2012. The contractor is required to locate and consult Navajo elders in their own communities and discuss topics pertaining to environment, ecology, Navajo culture, local history and local geography in both Navajo and English languages. Contractor will then compile the results into a technical report that will include locations plotted on current USGS topographical maps (1:24,000 or 1:100,000 scale as appropriate).
