- Description
- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is sponsoring a satellite meeting on "Development and Applications of Biomarkers of Alcohol Abuse and Tissue Damage, Cancer and Neurodegeneration" at the 2011 meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. The session will take place at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 23. Biomarkers have considerable potential as indicators of disease states and processes as well as aids in assessing responses to therapeutics. Biomarkers of alcohol consumption, alcohol dependence and alcohol-induced tissue and organ damage are necessary for detection and diagnosis of alcohol use disorders and for evaluations of the efficacy of treatments for these disorders. The symposium will feature examples of alcohol-related biomarker signatures that reflect both alcohol consumption and alcohol-mediated tissue damage. Additional presentations will describe novel biomarkers in the fields of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, with the goal of gaining insights that may be broadly applicable. Challenges and prospects for development and application of biomarkers in the pharmaceutical industry will also be addressed. The approaches and successes to be described may serve to increase interest in alcohol-related biomarkers and promote further progress in this area as well as in the development and application of biomarkers in general. Attendance is free but registration is required. Additional information, including registration forms can be found at http://www.seiservices.com/niaaasatellite/1038045/default.aspx. Please address any questions or concerns about the meeting to Dr Lawrence Baizer at baizerl@mail.nih.gov
