- NASA GSFC is seeking an engineering partner for the development of an instrumentelectromechanical pointing system. The potential GSFC NICER mission is designed to meetthe science goals as currently understood.The NICER mission is one of five selections from responses to the Explorer Missions ofOpportunity (MOO). Following is the description provided in the Explorer 2011Announcement:Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) Keith Gendreau, PI, Goddard -- Thismission would place an X-ray timing instrument on the International Space Station (ISS)to explore the exotic states of matter within neutron stars and reveal their interior andsurface compositions. Following selection NASA released the Explorer 2011 Guidelines and Criteria for the PhaseA Concept Study. Concept Study Reports (CSR) are due on September 21, 2012. Teams areresponsible for the content and quality of the CSR, site visit preparations, andresponses to weaknesses and questions.This partnership opportunity is being issued to select a partner to help prepare theNICER mission concept for entry into Phase B and to provide an end-to-end missiondeployment and gimbal system pointing solution should the mission continue through PhaseF. Responses will be treated as proprietary information and controlled as such.The respondents shall deliver an electronic and hardcopy version of the requestedinformation in a presentation format. Final presentation packages must be received by 4PM EST on January 31, 2012.
