- Description
- This is a Request for Information (RFI) in regards to a NAVAIR requirement for providing a cylindrical grinder to be used in the manufacturing of components for U.S. Navy applications. NAVAIR Lakehurst, NJ seeks potential sources and no cost product information of commercially available new cylindrical grinder. This RFI is for planning purposes and information only and should not be construed as a solicitation for applications or an obligation on the part of the government. Background A commercially available model is defined as the Contractor's model which, on the date this solicitation is issued, has been designed, engineered, sold, or is being offered for sale through advertisements or the Contractor's published catalogue or brochures. Products such as a prototype unit, pre-production model, or experimental unit do not qualify as meeting the requirements specified herein. However, the Government will consider changes to an existing commercially available product design that may improve the efficiency, accuracy, or productivity of the machine or decrease its operational costs. In order to expand shop capability, NAVAIR Lakehurst has a requirement for a cylindrical grinder with the following specifications: The cylindrical grinder shall be used for both overhauling used launch valve plugs and manufacturing new valve plugs for the Navy. These launch valve plugs are manufactured with a welded hard face seat surface of hardness up to 48 on the Rockwell C Scale. The grinder will be used to remove the old seat surface from used valve plugs as well as the rough and finish grinding on the seat surface for new and repaired plugs. These processes are currently performed using a 30" diameter, 2" wide grinding wheel, Norton #23AG4M5VBE. We require a new cylindrical grinder with all options and accessories needed to complete the plug grinding processes. The grinder shall be a new commercially available model. A commercially available model is defined as the Contractor's model which, on the date this RFI is issued, has been designed, engineered, sold, or is being offered for sale through advertisements or the Contractor's published catalogue or brochures. Products such as a prototype unit, pre-production model, or experimental unit do not qualify as meeting the requirements herein. However the Government will consider changes to an existing commercially available product design that may improve the efficiency, accuracy, or productivity of the machine or decrease its operational costs. The machine shall be capable of machining a tapered surface at a nominal angle of 7.125 degrees from the plug centerline. The actual angle must be adjustable to produce zero clearance at assembly. The machine shall have a 20" swing, 50" between centers, and a work piece weight capacity of 1400lbs. The work head shall have a chuck capable of accepting a 3" diameter part end. The tailstock shall have a live 4 jaw chuck capable of chucking on the inside diameter of a 4"diameter by 2.5" deep bore. The tailstock shall also have the capability of using a live center for parts that do not have the 4" diameter bore. The machine shall be capable of producing a surface finish of 62 micro inches or better. The machine may have either manual or CNC control. Information Requested Information in the following areas will assist NAVAIR Lakehurst in the development of its procurement strategy. Qualified vendors should provide the following: Product Literature: Brochures, catalogs, or other documents listing commercially available new cylindrical grinder; Product Literature on the software being provided with the equipment Equipment utility requirements; Product Literature on housing units/ enclosures available for this equipment; Detailed product descriptions of their new cylindrical grinder; Foundation drawings and requirements for their new cylindrical grinder (if one is required); Procurement history with their new cylindrical grinder; Long-Term Reliability and maintainability data; including the expected life (in years); Product drawings and photographs of their new cylindrical grinder. Typical production plans and installation timeframes. ** It is preferred that all measurements be stated in US Standard units. Responses should cite RFI number N68335-12-RFI-8003 and be addressed to the attention of Ms Hillary Sheehan Code: 2.5.2.5.2. ; Email: hillary.sheehan@navy.mil. All responses are due by 30 January 2012. Respondents are notified that a formal solicitation MAY NOT necessarily result from this RFI.
