- Description
- Lower Sherando Dam Outlet Works Repair DESCRIPTION: The scope of work includes the base item of repair of the outfall conduit and option items for removal of the control tower structure above the intake trash rack and replacement of the manual slide gate operator with a remotely controlled hydraulically operated unit and related work including, but not limited to, disposal of the control tower debris, clearing sediment and debris from around the intake valve and trash rack, and installing a remote control panel for valve operation from shore. Two options may be presented for disposal of the control tower debris: (1) Removal of the debris from the impoundment and disposal off site, or (2) breaking up and scattering of the debris into segments dispersed about the deeper portions of the impoundment. The scattered debris would be sized small enough to not produce projections off the surface floor of 2 feet and large enough to not be moved by the flow of currents during impoundment fill or draining. Two options may be presented for the subsequent operation of the drain valve after the control tower superstructure has been removed: (1) Replacement of the manual operator with a remotely controlled hydraulic operator adapted to the existing gate valve, or (2) replacement of the existing gate valve with a hydraulically operated knife edge gate valve. Repair of the outfall pipe shall include injection of the areas of infiltration with an expansive chemical grout to fill any existing voids outside of the pipe and provide some compaction of the surrounding soil.
