- The USGS Western Coastal and Marine Geology Program (C&MG) has the primary responsibility for marine geologic, geophysical, and associated oceanographic studies of the continental shelves, slopes, deep ocean, and coastal zones of California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, and Alaska. These investigations require professional and technical personnel trained in geology, and in associated technical skills that include conducting field surveys and analyzing sedimentary data. The USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project (MHDP) is collaborating with the California Geological Survey (CGS) and other institutions to assist communities reduce their risk from natural hazards by evaluating existing paleotsunami deposits. The tasks require the contractor to conduct reconnaissance tsunami deposit surveys at selected sites and write technical reports describing work done, preliminary results and recommendations. One site included in the survey, Carpinteria Salt Marsh, has previously been studied by the USGS. Additional data is required from this site to determine if tsunami deposits are present. The tasks needed under this award require the contractor to organize a field team to collect this additional data, determine if tsunami deposits are present, and publish the results as an USGS open file report or as a peer=AD reviewed publication.
