In accordance with FAR 6.302-1, DLA Logistics Information Service has a requirement for Motorola 800 MHz radios. The brand name Motorola is required to ensure the radios are compatible and interoperable with the current system in use. The HDI Federal Center currently utilizes 800 MHz Motorola radios, along with Motorola headsets and microphones. Buying separate accessories for these 20 radios if another brand were to be used would incur additional costs and they could not be used with the current stock of Motorola radios. In addition, local law enforcement, fire departments and emergency services also utilize this brand of radio and all equipment and accessories, again allowing interoperability of all equipment. Per DOD Instruction 6055.17, the HDI Federal Center must be interoperable with the equipment local support uses. While users are able to speak with one another on different brands of radio, the ancillary equipment that is used is not interchangeable. In an emergency situation, the same brands of radios, batteries, headsets, chargers and microphones are needed for expediency of response teams. Finally, the radios will receive programing from the State of Michigan. All of the templates have been created for programing this particular radio to change the programming would incur an additional cost.
