- Description
- Background This is a Request for Information (RFI) synopsis for written information only. This is not a solicitation announcement for proposals and no contract will be awarded as a result of this announcement. The Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division, Lakehurst, NJ (NAWCADLKE) requires a Fiber Optic Repair Set (FORS) that contains the tools for performing splice repairs to aircraft fiber optic cables. It will be required for in-line splices as well as splicing of pre-terminated pigtails to replace damaged termini at the connectors. The following definitions relate specifically to this RFI. Definitions Fiber Optic Splice: Permanent bonding of the ends of two optical fibers which maximizes optical throughput and minimizes interface losses Fiber End Face: The surface of the end of a bare fiber in an optical cable Operating Workspace: The dimensions of the minimum physical volume required to perform an operation, including orientation of that space Electromagnetic susceptibility: The vulnerability of equipment to the effects of electromagnetic radiation, resulting in degraded performance or sustaining temporary or permanent damage Electromagnetic emissions: Radiation coming from the operation of an electrical or electronic device; the concern is that the frequency and intensity of this radiation can interfere with the operation or output of another electronic device. Technology Readiness Level (TRL): A set of nine graded definitions/descriptions of stages of technology maturity ranging from usage of basic principles (TRL 1) to a mature product proven through mission operations (TRL 9) Request for Information: The NAWCADLKE is seeking information from industry regarding FORS technology. Please provide the following information about a FORS, or FORS technology that is either under development or that is a product supplied by your company / organization: 1) General description of your FORS product / technology. 2) Identification of critical enabling technologies of your FORS. Include technology readiness level (TRL) of your FORS product / technology and a summary of field usage, test and demonstration results. 3) Overview of your FORS concept of operation (including user operating manual if available). Discuss the operator - FORS interface, FORS - aircraft interface and any related issues. Discuss anticipated and demonstrated benefit versus cost of utilization of your FORS and any demonstrated Return on Investment (ROI). 4) Discuss critical information required for the use of your FORS (e.g. types and sizes of fiber that can be spliced; operating restrictions such as working space and equipment orientation, power requirements, consumable products, etc.) 5) Describe environmental test methods and results that your FORS has been subjected to. Discuss environmental thresholds that the FORS is capable of operating in (e.g. Electromagnetic susceptibility or emissions; operating / storage temperature; humidity; altitude; shock; explosive atmosphere). 6) If applicable, provide customer testimonials with references. Provide your point(s) of contact. 7) Provide information about your company / organization including: Brief description of your company / organization; Small / large business, 8A, hub-zone, veteran owned status; Any past or present Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) awards related to your FORS. 8) Provide any additional information you desire.
