Description
Elements of the Arc Flash analysis (scope of work ) The details of the requirements for an arc flash analysis are found in NEC 110.16 and NFPA 70E. OSHA references compliance to NFPA 70E using Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (General Duty Clause) which states that employers "shall furnish to each of its employees employment and a place of employment which is free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees". The location is a research facility consisting of a 50,000 sq ft two story laboratory, a 25,000 sq ft single story laboratory and twenty-three smaller support buildings. The elements we will require in the scope of work are as follows: 1) Determine the system modes of operation and confidence tolerance of system model. 2) Calculate a minimum and maximum bolted fault current at each equipment bus. 3) Estimate the minimum and maximum arcing fault current at each equipment bus. 4) Determine the arcing fault current seen by each protective device. 5) Determine the trip time of each protective device based on the minimum and maximum arcing fault current it sees. 6) Calculate the largest incident energy at the specified working distance, including appropriate arcing fault tolerance. 7) Calculate the Arc Flash Boundary 8) Determine the required PPE level 9) Document the results and generate labels to be placed on the equipment. Labels should include: the numerical values for Flash Hazard Category, Minimum Arc Rating (cal/cm 2 ), Flash Protection Boundary, Limited/Restricted/Prohibited approach Boundaries, Voltage Shock Hazard and the words: "Warning-ArcFlash and Shock Hazard-Appropriate PPE Required". 10) Where Flash Hazard is determined to be 2 or greater at a bus, an attempt shall be made to lower the Flash Hazard Category by manipulation of adjustable breaker ampere rating on the breaker. 11) Create and provide a one-line diagram of facility electrical system. 12) We anticipate the analysis will identify 170 load terminal points requiring labels. Arc flash training is not a requested element.
