- The goal of the field sterilizer program is to develop a steam sterilizer with improved sterilization effectiveness that meets the needs of field hospitals. The sterilizer will be an electrically operated, large chamber steam sterilizer for use in (1) the Central Materiel Section of Combat Support Hospitals (CSHs) to sterilize supplies (e.g., surgical instruments, dressings, liquids) used in surgical procedures and other casualty care in the operating room, emergency treatment area, and intensive care units, and (2) the Area Medical Laboratory (AML) to sterilize pathological specimens prior to disposal.
