Description

Mepron (atovaquone) is indicated in the prevention of Pneumocistis Carinii pneumonia and is the only item that is effective in patients that are resistant, and/or allergic to trimethoprin-sulfamethoxazole. Pneumocistis Carinii pneumonia is the leading cause of death among HIV infected individuals and as such, this medication is greatly needed. In addition, atovaquone has the advantage of not causing myelosuppression, which is an important issue in patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation.
