- Description
- The National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) seeks information on commercial vendors that are capable of providing a Manual Wedge Wire Bonder to support nanofabrication in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST), NIST's nanotechnology user facility. The system will be sited and used in the CNST NanoFab as a shared resource accessible to researchers from industry, academia, NIST, and other government agencies. After results of this market research are obtained and analyzed, and specifications developed, NIST may conduct a competitive procurement and subsequently award a contract for a Manual Wedge Wire Bonder. If at least two qualified small businesses are identified during this market research stage, then any competitive procurement that resulted would be conducted as a small business set-aside. The CNST NanoFab currently owns and operates a single manual wedge wire bonder which is dedicated to using 25 micrometer-diameter gold wire. Switching from gold to aluminum on the existing bonder is a time consuming task and necessitates the re-optimization of process parameters after each wire change. To increase capacity and improve process repeatability, NIST requires a second wire bonder that can be dedicated to bond with 25 micrometer-diameter aluminum wire. NIST has the need for a new wire bonder that meets the following minimum requirements: 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: a. The system shall be: i. Manually operated. ii. A table-top model. iii. Equipped with a single lever Z-manipulator. iv. Equipped with electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. v. Configured for wedge bonding on first and second bond. vi. Capable of stitch bonding after second bond. vii. Capable of storing a minimum of 10 user programs. 2. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: a. The bonder head shall be able to switch between a 45 degree and 90 degree wire feed. b. The wedge shall be equipped with a radiant tool heater. c. The bonder shall accept wire with diameters from 18 micrometers through 50 micrometers. d. The wire spools shall be 12.5 mm (0.5 inch) in diameter. e. The bonder shall be capable of accepting both aluminum (Al-1 percent Si) and gold wire. f. The system shall be equipped with a 63 kHz, half wave transducer. 3. WORKHOLDER: a. The workholder shall be equipped with the following: i. An adjustable height platform. ii. A heater with temperature controller capable of heating and controlling the workholder to a minimum of 125 degrees C. 4. WIRE BOND CAPABILITIES a. The system shall have the following capabilities: i. Bond force shall be adjustable from 10 g to 250 g. ii. Z-travel shall have a minimum range of 12.5 mm (0.5 inch). 5. MICROSCOPE: a. The microscope shall be equipped with a stereo-zoom with at least 50x magnification. b. The microscope shall be equipped with a ring illuminator. 6. TRAINING: The vendor shall provide on-site operation and maintenance training following installation. NIST is seeking responses from all responsible sources, including large, foreign, and small businesses. Small businesses are defined under the associated NAICS code for this effort, 334516, as those domestic sources having 500 employees or less. Please include your company's size classification and socio-economic status in any response to this notice. Companies that manufacture Manual Wedge Wire Bonders are requested to email a detailed report describing their abilities to paula.wilkison@nist.gov no later than the response date for this sources sought notice. The report should include achievable specifications and any other information relevant to your product or capabilities. Also, the following information is requested to be provided as part of the response to this sources sought notice: 1. Name of the company that manufactures the system components for which specifications are provided. 2. Name of company(ies) that are authorized to sell the system components, their addresses, and a point of contact for the company (name, phone number, fax number and email address). 3. Indication of number of days, after receipt of order that is typical for delivery of such systems. 4. Indication of whether each instrument for which specifications are sent to paula.wilkison@nist.gov are currently on one or more GSA Federal Supply Schedule contracts and, if so, the GSA FSS contract number(s). 5. Any other relevant information that is not listed above which the Government should consider in developing its minimum specifications and finalizing its market research.
