Description
The majority of Bridge Structure 229, spans 1-5, across Sylvan Slough were constructed in 1922 replacing an older structure represented by the construction in Span 6. The bridge structural members are comprised of steel plate and angles riveted together to form built-up sections. The general orientation of the spans is in a NNW to SSE direction, however, for simplicity the ends of the bridge will be called the north and south ends, and the girders will be referred to as the east and west sides. The primary purpose of this project is the replacement of approximately 75' of timber deck covering Span 6 of the Railroad Bridge Structure 229 with a new decking system. This work entails but is not limited to the following: 1) the removal and replacement of all ballast, timber ties, and rail necessary to install a new waterproof decking system, 2) the inspection of hidden portions of the girders after the deck removal, 3) repair of structural damage found during inspections, and 4) safety improvements such as the addition of a walkway and handrails. The secondary purpose is a bid option to remove dead weight along with providing corrosion prevention and inspection access to Spans 1-5, approximately 525', on Railroad Bridge Structure 229. The work entails removing rail ballast and the underlying timber deck to include the subsequent installation of a new safety walkway system with ballast curb. This is a Design-build project and the Contractor is solely responsible for the design and construction. The Contractor shall provide all labor, material, and equipment to perform the work. Anticipated solicitation issue date is June 4, 2013.
