- Description
- On May 16, 2013, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) released the Naval Power Systems Technology Development Roadmap, presenting the Navy s way ahead for electrical power systems and informing stakeholders of the anticipated Navy investments in research and development (R&D). Developed by Program Executive Office Ships, Electric Ships Office (PMS 320) in conjunction with NAVSEA, the Office of Naval Research, PEO Littoral Combat Ship, PEO Carriers, PEO Submarines, PEO Integrated Warfare Systems, OPNAV and industry, the NPS-TDR is a comprehensive update to the 2007 Next Generation Integrated Power System (NGIPS) TDR to maintain relevance with Navy missions and emerging Fleet requirements. The roadmap focuses and aligns the power system investments for the Navy, Defense Department, industry and academia to guide future R&D investments to enable the Navy to leverage these investments to meet its future needs more affordably. Included in the TDR are specific recommendations and opportunities for near, mid- and long-term investments, with a renewed focus on energy efficiency. These opportunities range from an energy magazine to support advanced weapons and sensors, development of energy recovery, and the continued discovery and invention through basic research efforts. The NPS-TDR aligns electric power system developments with war fighter needs and enables capability-based budgeting. The TDR is responding to the emerging needs of the Navy and while the plan is specific in its recommendations, it is inherently flexible enough to adapt to the changing requirements and threats that may influence the 30-year ship acquisition plan. Opportunities for near-term development include: an Energy Magazine to support advanced weapons and sensors; development of energy recovery; prototypes and demonstrations for advanced versions of Energy Magazine, ship power management controller, and energy recovery; advanced medium voltage DC (MVDC) technologies as an alternative to AC; and continued discovery and invention (D&I) basic research issues. NAVSEA plans to update the NPS-TDR every two years to provide revised predictions as legacy challenges are answered and new ones are identified.
