Description
The work of this project involves repairing a wharf damaged by the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy. The wharf is located on the eastern side of the inner basin of old harbor on Block Island, Rhode Island, and is in front of Ballard's Inn. Numerous inboard pile caps have become elevated above the tops of the inboard timber piles. The work involves removing some of the 4 quote mark x 10 quote mark deck planks and timber wheel guards in order to provide access to the pile caps. Sand and rip rap will need to be excavated or moved around each of the inboard piles in order to provide the room necessary to reseat the pile caps on top of the piles. Once the pile caps are reseated on the inboard piles, steel straps (two per pile) will be installed at each pile, including the outboard piles. No excavation is necessary at the outboard piles. After the pile caps have been reseated and the straps installed, the existing timber decking and timber wheel guards shall be reinstalled using existing hardware. In addition, the inboard fascia board shall be replaced in-kind and two ladders on the outboard face of the wharf shall be replaced. The work of the project requires construction operations immediately adjacent to a busy public restaurant. Barricades and chain link safety fencing shall be installed in this location to separate the general public from the active construction areas of the project. The barricades and safety fencing shall be installed prior to the start of all other onsite activities. The Contractor shall modify and implement other construction methods as necessary to ensure the safety of the public in this area.
