- Description
- Overview: The USCG requires body armor plates for use by Coast Guard Law Enforcement Personnel during the conduct of Military or Law Enforcement Operations and Training. These ballistic plates must provide protection from a broad range of ballistic threats up to and including common, armor piercing rifle cartridges. Part Number: Ceradyne Inc. Defender 500 SWC; equivalent items from other manufacturers may be considered. Performance Specifications for Ballistic Plates: 1. Stand-Alone Level IV Ballistic Protection - Front, back, and side ballistic plates must provide ballistic protection equivalent to National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Level IV standards without the use of soft body-armor vests/inserts. Vendors offering ballistic plates which are NOT certified in accordance with NIJ's Body Armor Standards may be required to complete lot acceptance testing of representative lot samples in a NIJ or DOD approved, independent ballistic test facility. Specific lot test requirements will be provided to interested vendors upon request. 2. Multi Hit Capable - Front and back ballistic plates must provide protection from up to three rounds of common, military-type non-armor piercing rifle cartridges. Minimum Shot-to-Shot and Shot-to-Edge separation shall be in accordance with NIJ Standards. 3. Sizes - Ballistic plates must be "Swimmer / Shooter Cut" and be suitably sized / shaped in order to be compatible with currently fielded plate carriers (Eagle Industries - Plate Carrier Quick Release System; Item #PCQR-SP size medium/large and large/x-large) : Front/Back Med: approximately 10" x 11.6" Front/Back Large: approximately 10" x 12.1" Side: approximately 6" x 6" 4. In order to comply with stringent USCG weight restrictions: Front and Back Plates must weigh less than 5.6 lbs; Sides Plates must weigh less than 2 lbs each. 5. Front, Back and Side plates must be less than 1 inch thickness. 6. All ballistic plates must be sufficiently rugged to remain safe, operational, and effective following exposure to extreme environments such as high temperature, low temperature, sea water, chlorine, gasoline, motor oil, weapons lubricant, and UV light. 7. Quantity Required: Front/Back Ballistic Plates; Med: 40 Front/Back Ballistic Plates: Large: 120 Side Plates: 160 8. Vendors offering ballistic plates that are not certified by the NIJ must provide quotes clearly indicating the costs for lot testing by an independent test lab.
