Description
For purposes of this contract, the term "Consulting Physicist" is an individual(s) with offices nearby Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Boston Healthcare System (BHS) facilities; and capable of ensuring that VABHS is compliant with applicable provisions of Title 10 Chapter 20, Title 10 Chapter 35, NUREG-1556, 49 CFR, 21 CFR Part 1020 and with other applicable State and Federal regulations, and with conditions specified in the license, ACR, NHPP and the Joint Commission. The Consulting Physicist shall be familiar with Massachusetts regulations, and practices of other medical licensees in the vicinity of VABHS. Work under this contract may be carried out at the Jamaica Plain Campus, West Roxbury Campus, Brocton Campus, Lowell, Worcester, and/or other Community Based Outpatient Clinics. The contractor will have access to the facilities anytime within normal working hours (approximately 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM). The Consulting Physicist conducts technical quality assurance testing on each diagnostic x-ray unit in the institution upon initial installation, annually, and after equipment re-configuration (e.g., after major repairs, upon suspected equipment malfunction, after major modification to equipment location and/or after major modification to structures surrounding the equipment). The Consulting Physicist shall perform evaluations of the measured radiation exposure resulting from the use of the equipment and its compliance with existing regulations. Additionally, for x-ray machines in cardiac cath and the EP lab, the radiation exposure resulting from the use of the equipment shall be measured and reported at various table heights and simulated patient thicknesses. Upon initial installation, an examination of on each x-ray unit with regards to its location with reference to controlled and uncontrolled areas, and an assessment of the potential exposure to the environment surrounding the equipment shall be performed. Annual accuracy tests on dose calibrators shall be performed by the Consulting Physicist. Copies of this report will be sent to the RSO, Clinical Engineering Service, and Nuclear Medicine representatives. A calibration sticker shall be placed on each unit indicating the date the calibration was performed. Hand held instruments shall be calibrated by the Consulting Physicist, as required by 10 CFR 35.61, and the license. The calibrations shall be performed in accordance with nationally recognized standards, such as N323-1978 American National Standard Radiation Protection Instrumentation Test and Calibration.
