Description
Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) is conducting ongoing research and development for an in-situ restoration method for semiconductor switches that will ultimately increase the reliability of power conversion systems or switch mode power supplies. The basic method involves the detection of semiconductor switch degradation during operation and if needed, provides restoration gate drive signals to recover the switch. This approach has the potential for use in a variety of switch mode power supply applications including power conversion systems used in energy storage grid tied applications, renewables such as photovoltaic and wind energy, distributed energy resources, motor drives, military and civilian aircraft controllers, and anywhere semiconductor switches are required to perform reliable system operation. This approach could significantly increase the reliability of such systems. Sandia's primary focus is in seeking a company or companies interested in partnering opportunities leading to construction and manufacturing of this technology. Partnerships may take the form of Cooperative Research & Development Agreements (CRADAs), or Work for Others agreements (WFOs). In addition, potential partners must have a significant interest in developing this technology since the CRADA or WFO is expected to include funds-in to Sandia from the partner. Interested companies are preferred but not required to have experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: •Design and manufacture of power electronics sensors and drive circuits from initial conception through production •Design for manufacturability •Design and construction of power circuits intended to operate in extreme environments (e.g. high temperature) •Expertise in signal processing and/or feedback control circuits required to implement gate drive restoration algorithms •Power device companies that have known physics-based degradation models for their power semiconductor switches Sandia is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under Contract DE-AC04-94AL85000.
