- Sophisticated electronic microsystems can now be made at such low cost that they are increasingly pervasive throughout the battlefield and large numbers can be widely proliferated and used for applications such as distributed remote sensing and communications. However, it is nearly impossible to track and recover every device, resulting in unintended accumulation in the environment as well as subsequent unauthorized use and compromise of IP and technological advantage. The VAPR program seeks to address this pervasive challenge by developing electronic systems capable of physically disappearing in a controlled, triggerable manner. These transient electronics ideally should have performance comparable to commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) electronics, but with limited device persistence that can be programmed, adjusted in real-time, triggered, and/or be sensitive to the deployment environment. The Vanishing Programmable Resources (VAPR) program will develop new concepts and capabilities that will enable transient electronics to become a deployable technology. The VAPR program will focus on developing and establishing a basis set of materials, components, integration, and manufacturing capabilities to undergird a new class of electronics defined by both their performance and transience. The efficacy of the technological capability developed through VAPR will be demonstrated by building transient sensors with RF links - a system representative of what might be used to sense environmental or biomedical conditions and communicate with a remote user.
