Description
SOLICITATION - HIV/AIDS SENIOR PREVENTION ADVISOR The HIV/AIDS Senior Prevention Advisor position is located in the HIV Team in the Health, Population and Nutrition (HPN) Office. USAID's Health program in Malawi represents approximately 70% of the Mission's budget and the HIV portfolio currently constitutes almost 50% of the overall Health budget. The HIV team manages an annual budget of $39 million and oversees programs in behavioral and biomedical prevention, care and treatment, health systems strengthening, and OVC and community development. The HIV Team currently has nine staff members. Similar to other southern African countries, Malawi faces a generalized HIV/AIDS epidemic that is spread primarily through heterosexual intercourse, followed by mother-to-child transmission. While urban HIV prevalence appears to have declined somewhat in recent years and national and rural prevalence appear to have stabilized, Malawi continues to experience a severe HIV epidemic. The Government of Malawi has adopted several prevention methods aimed at reducing sexual transmission of HIV. These interventions have seen some decline in adult HIV prevalence over the last decade, from a modeled 13.2% in 2000, to 11.8% in 2004 and 10.6% in 2010. Yet there are still an estimated 70,000 new infections annually in Malawi.
