Description
The voltage to frequency (V2F) converter is commonly used in synchrotron beam line experiments for converting a slowly varying voltage signal representing x-ray flux to a high frequency pulse train, with each pulse representing a packet of x-ray energy. The pulses are then integrated to provide a total energy calculation. Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source (APS) is capable of producing high flux, and needs a converter with a higher frequency. As commercial equipment only goes up to 2 MHz, the inventors developed a higher speed V2F. The technology is reduced-to-practice and two prototypes have been made. A manual, a list of materials, and schematics drawings are available. 1) Four independent channels with output ranges being 2 MHz, 10 MHz, 25 MHz, and 50 MHz. 2) The FPGA can be programmed to go up to 100 MHz. 3) Positive voltages from 0 V to 10 V can be input. Prototype will be improved to allow for Negative voltages. 4) Input offset voltages can be stored in internal tables for calibration. 5) Digital display allows user to select instrument settings via menus, and display input voltage and output frequency. 6) Prototype features digital temperature sensor for temperature compensation, though not currently implemented in firmware. The technology is available for exclusive and non-exclusive licensing.
