Description
Language Summer Abroad Program (LSAP) China 6 Week Program Languages and Cultures Department U.S. Naval Academy May 29-July 12, 2014 The LSAP China six-week program is an intensive immersion language program incorporating vigorous language learning and fascinating cultural study into an intensive and rewarding lifetime experience. Eighteen (18) participants spend six weeks in Tianjin, China ™s third largest city, attending five and half-hour intensive language classes every day, including two-hour lectures, two-hour drill sessions, and one and half-hour one-on-one tutorial sessions. The total of the instruction hours exceeds one-year contact hours in Chinese class at the USNA. Participants also take cultural classes in Taiji, Chinese painting, calligraphy and other folk or traditional arts. The 18 midshipmen are of 3 different language levels and need to be placed in 3 different level classes. Eleven (11) are at "High-Beginners to Lower-Intermediate", six (6) are at "Intermediate to Higher Intermediate" and one (1) is at Advanced level. They also need different levels of tutors. On weekends, participants study Chinese society from both readings and first-hand experience of traveling in China, and use the language while experiencing the culture and society. Participants have opportunities both to explore local life and to visit other cities representatives of the Chinese culture. The 2014 LSAP 6-Week China Program is going to visit cultural heritage sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the traditional Hutong area in Beijing, as well as the Terracotta Warriors Museums and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the ancient capital city Xi ™an. They will watch an Acrobatic show and a Tang Dynasty music-dance show on the two trips. Itinerary: 1) Tianjin 6-Week Intensive Course Program: General Departing Washington DC and arriving Beijing 5/29-5/30/2014 Arriving Tianjin and attending Opening Ceremony 5/31-6/1/2014 Language and Culture Classes, local cultural activities (6 weeks 6/2-7/11/2014) Returning Washington DC 7/12/2014 2) Lodging Double Room with internet access (44 nights) 3) Two Cultural Excursion Trips organized by Vendor Beijing Trip (6/14-15/2014) Trains and buses, one-night 3-star hotel stay, 5 meals including a special dinner of Peking Duck; visiting with English-speaking guide to Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, the traditional Hutong area, the Xiushui Market, and watching an Acrobatic show. Xi ™an Trip (6/28-29/2014) Soft sleep and high-speed trains and buses, one-night 3-star hotel stay, 3 meals including a special dumpling banquet while watching a Tang Dynasty music-dance show; visiting with English-speaking guide to Terra Cotta Warriors, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the ancient Xi ™an City Wall. 4) Meals through plans by the Vendor (45 days) Bank Wire fee (one time only) Upon return to the USNA, participants will complete after-action reports summarizing their experience in China, and continue their Chinese language and China-related culture courses in the Fall Semester. They will be high-placed by two Chinese courses along the Naval Academy ™s Chinese language curriculum. This LSAP immersion training is for 18 students with 1 escort and shall include meals, lodging, travel visas, in-country travel, event admissions, and fees as required
