- Description
- Bulk Bag Filling Station Coin Counters Request for Information (RFI) Background The United States Mint is requesting information on potential high speed, durable coin counters to replace current coin counters on bulk bag counting stations in both the Denver and Philadelphia Mints. Bulk bags are large heavy-duty durable bags capable of containing an entire pallet's volume of coins (400,000 pennies, 240,000 nickels, 500,000 dimes, 200,000 quarters etc.) for shipment to the FRB banks and other coin depots. Currently, the Mint has over 175 coin counters that are either actively in use on the bagging stations or being refurbished or maintained to replace any of the active counters as needed to continue bulk bagging production operations. Currently, the coin counters on the bagging stations operate continuously for about 18 - 20 hours per day, four days per week to count and bag approximately 63 million coins per day (for both sites together). The coin counters are exposed and operated in a harsh metal dust industrial environment during operations. The current coin counter and bulk bagging system has a throughput of approximately 350,000 to 500,000 coins per bulk bag counting station per hour. The Mint has a total of 18 bulk bagging stations in production. In order to keep up with coin production and bagging demands, the bulk bagging stations have clusters of either four (4) or five (5) counters (each counter is about 24 inches in length and width and 12 inches high) integrated into a central control system to monitor operations and accurately control the coin counting into the bags. The coin counters and bagging stations fit into tight envelops under large hoppers that will not be moved to accommodate oversized coin counters. Request for Information The United States Mint is requesting information from companies that are in the business of manufacturing, installing, and controlling large volumes of coins accurately. Please provide the following information (at a minimum) about your potential coin counting and handling systems: • Throughput rates per counter • Control systems for both the counter and integration into the bagging stations • Level of accuracy • Exact bag stops. • Display visibility • Ease of programming • "Error-proofing" attributes • Information on how you would integrate the counter(s) into the Mint's current operations • Durability and life span of the counter • Method of feeding and counting individual coins • Sound emanation in dB 1 foot from the counter. • Maintenance and servicing capabilities • Any other information that the Mint could use for evaluations. • Capable of counting up to six thousand plus (6,000+ dimes) coins per minute • +/- 1 coin each continuous run, (this is defines from a start to stop which may be 100 coins or 100,000 coins) • Capable of connecting directly to PLC's (i.e. Ethernet) • Capable of interfacing/controlling feed vibrator to the coin counter • Have quick disconnect connectors for easy replacement in and out of the bulk station. • No exposed moving parts
