- Description
- Transcribe Thin-Section Lithologic Data from Historic Records. The U.S. Geological Survey intends to award a non-competitive purchase order to Comprehensive Volcanic Petrographics LLC, pursuant to FAR Part 13.106(b), for gathering, summarizing, and compiling existing historical lithologic records from the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in various forms and formats for inclusion into the USGS online thin-section image library. Comprehensive Volcanic Petrographics, LLC led by Richard G. Warren is the only known qualified source to provide these services. His publication record demonstrates expertise in petrographic analysis and his online database and sample collection demonstrate a unique dedication to preserve petrographic information and samples produced for weapons testing. He supported the Weapons Testing and UGTA projects as a petrographer/geochemist/geologist at LANL from 1980 to 2003. Mr. Warren authored an online Petrographic, Geochemical, and Geophysical (PGG) database (Warren, et al., 2003, see citation above for URL) to provide geologic information considered most important for support of weapons testing. Lithologic records exist in a variety of formats, including petrographic index cards, recipe cards, and field notes. Warren's experience and background is unique and will provide additional insight with respect to the proofing of records developed by others which are to be compiled into the required electronic format necessary to be input into the database. In addition, a segment of the records to be compiled were those originated by Mr. Warren in earlier years, so he is best able to interpret those. Alone among active petrographers greatly experienced in analysis of the existing inventory of thin sections from the NNSS, Warren's publication record demonstrates knowledge and collaboration with many early workers at NNSS, adding unique historical perspective to aid in interpreting lithologies associated with thin sections contained in the USGS collection. No other sources are known which possess the background, experience, and knowledge of the existing handwritten lithologic records and data sets required specific to the NNSS required for this contract work. Duration of the proposed purchase order: Date of Award through 3/31/2017, with final delivery 3/31/2017. No solicitation documents will be issued. All responsible sources may submit a capability statement (on or before the closing date of this announcement) which shall be considered by the agency. NAICS: 541330. Anticipated award date: On or about September 15, 2014. USGS Point of Contact: D. Shannon, USGS OAG-Sacramento Branch, (916) 278-9342, dshannon@usgs.gov
