- Description
- The USAID/South Africa Health Office manages the largest President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program in the world, as well as other health activities funded from USAID’s Child Survival account. USAID/SA funding for health programs totaled over $250 million in FY 2014. The Health Office has grown rapidly from 12 staff in 2007 to more than 40 staff in 2014 and is organized into four divisions. The Health Office collaborates closely with other agencies to implement PEPFAR, especially the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State Department, the Peace Corps and the Department of Defense. Health Office staff are active participants and often chair interagency technical working groups on a range of health-related issues. The South Africa PEPFAR program produces almost one-quarter of all PEPFAR results globally. The Health Systems Strengthening Advisor provides technical guidance for specific components of the health systems strengthening (HSS) activities within the USAID/SA PEPFAR portfolio. This includes a dedicated HSS portfolio covering supply chain strengthening, human resources for health, leadership, management and governance, health finance, quality assurance/quality improvement, and operational research. Additionally, significant service delivery strengthening activities are carried out through the USAID/SA Care and Treatment portfolio, as well as the Prevention and Orphans and Vulnerable Children portfolios. The work of the incumbent is performed in close coordination with other Health Team members, and includes the full range of responsibility for planning, implementing, monitoring, and overseeing systems strengthening activities related to PEPFAR. Frequent contact and collaboration with USAID funded implementing partners, and other USG agencies are expected. The incumbent will be a member of the Health Systems Strengthening team, one of the four teams within the Health Office of USAID/South Africa.
