Description
UT-Battelle, LLC, acting under its Prime Contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the management and operation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking commercialization partners for its Settlement Mapping Tool invention. Settlement Mapping Tool (SMTool) is a technology for processing images to identify features of interest such as formal and informal dwellings. SMTool scans large scale high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery to automatically detect and characterize settlement structures (e.g., residences, buildings and factories) based on the spatial patterns encoded in the imagery. A learning model enables the system to identify features from known features identified by the user. The rich data provided high resolution satellite imagery provides new opportunities to better understand the physical phenomena on the ground by exploiting the visual patterns captured in the imagery. Efficient scene recognition from image data is a challenging problem. While traditional satellite image analysis focus more on pixel level classification using the spectral and texture features, this approach enables investigation of local structural and spatial patterns for better understanding of the aerial scene. Current commercial software packages perform object based analysis by breaking up the image into objects based on color and texture measurements. The objects are examined to automatically recognize the underlying scene. Often such techniques lack the computational efficiency required to scale the process for global scale satellite image analysis. Such off-the-shelf packages are not optimized for a specific process. This process was created specifically to perform "settlement characterization" from remotely sensed aerial images.
