Draft Project: This purchase is for an upgrade tracking system to replace the current tracking system in the Virtual Reality (VR) Laboratory. The current system has been degrading for the past couple of years. This new system will replace the old system and restore/enhance performance of the tracking capabilities of the VR Laboratory. The VR Lab is used to conduct research involving human subjects to better understand workplace injuries/fatalities. The system is unique in that dangerous situations can be reproduced without posing danger to the human participants. Project background : The Virtual Reality Laboratory CAVE System was originally purchased in the late 1990's. In 2008, the system underwent a major overhaul and many components were upgraded. The new system worked great for the studies that were being completed at that time. An integral part of the CAVE System is the ability to track human subjects while they interact with the system. The current tracking system is ultrasonic. Ultrasonic sound signals are generated at the ceiling of the system through a series of emitters while microphones mounted to special 3D glasses pickup these signals and transfers the information to the computer where they are converted to position data. The further away the microphones are from the emitters, causes the signal to be lost, which in turn causes the subject position to be lost. Once lost, the system cannot update the generated graphical images being produced. Due to the configuration of our system, additional emitters cannot be added to alleviate this problem. Project description: This purchase is to upgrade the tracking system on the Virtual Reality (VR) Laboratory CAVE System. The current tracking system has been degrading for the past couple of years.
