Background/Overview: The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD is establishing Diversity set of the ESKAPE pathogens. Isolates from within the WRAIR and from outside collaborators will be tested for phenotypic and genotypic characterization and long term storage in a frozen repository. WRAIR is seeking to purchase Applied Maths' BioNumerics Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis analysis software so that isolates can have their DNA analyzed and the information stored a database housed at the WRAIR. Applied Maths, Inc. has developed a unique and powerful DNA Fingerprint analysis software that takes the DNA banding patterns created by performing Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis and compares that result to all of the other DNA fingerprints of the isolates in the repository. It then mathematically calculates and produces a dendrograms, or family tree, of all the isolates tested so that their genetic relatedness can be visualized and compared. This allows the Department of Wound Infections to utilize this invaluable epidemiological information for the isolates and create a better diversity panel for future testing. Such a diversity set will be invaluable for the WRAIR and its investigators. In order to make use of this technology, WRAIR intends to purchase Applied Maths' BioNumerics Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis analysis software and the training that is needed to optimally use the software.
