Description
"Science & Technology (S&T) for Blended Adaptive Language & Culture Training" Symposium Solicitation Number : GGW033020151055 Notice Type: Market Research Background: In an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, maintaining our Nation's global security interests requires a military force that is able to successfully communicate and interact with a wide range of cultures - in their native language. To meet this challenge the Department of Defense (DoD) must identify and develop new and innovative training approaches to make language and culture training more effective, more accessible, and more relevant. The challenge of teaching language and culture is not solely relegated to the DoD. Federal Agencies, like the Department of Education (DoEd), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of State (DoS), among others, are focused on the challenges of understanding how to better teach language and culture and on how to benefit from the most cutting edge language and culture training technologies. As an indicator of just how cross-cutting this problem is, the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy's National Science and Technology Council Committee on Science chartered the Interagency Working Group on Language and Communication to explore, document, and foster collaboration between the research communities across the Federal Government. Blended learning, which combines instructional technologies with classroom instruction, is one of the most promising approaches to satisfying the language and culture training challenge. The Department of Defense is now investing significant resources to blend adaptive training technologies with classroom instruction to make language training more accessible and more effective for each student. To better understand how to do this, the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), in collaboration with the Human Performance, Training, and BioSystems Directorate, and Human Systems Community of Interest (HS COI), Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, is hosting a two-day Symposium to help identify key issues, challenges, and solutions for developing and integrating adaptive language training technologies into the classroom. Conference Security Classification : Unclassified. Event Description : The "Science & Technology (S&T) for Blended Adaptive Language & Culture Training" Symposium will be conducted at the Executive Conference Center (4075 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22203) on 11-12 May, 2015. The main focus of the Symposium is: • Understanding the S&T challenges and opportunities associated with creating better, more effective blended and adaptive language and culture training in more efficient ways to maximize the return on training investment. Topics to be covered include: • State-of-the-art and outstanding challenges underlying blended learning • State-of-the-art and outstanding challenges underlying adaptive training • Opportunities and challenges for delivering blended, adaptive language & culture training The format for the Symposium will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions that map onto the three areas listed above, breakout/brainstorming sessions, and opportunities to demonstrate new technologies and research. The outcome from this Symposium will be: (1) a draft roadmap that will address the next stages of Science & Technology (S&T) research needed to develop and integrate adaptive training technology into the classroom; and (2) an edited book, to help capture the scope of activities in which Symposium participants are engaged. Conference Participants: Symposium attendance is limited and will be by-invitation only. Symposium attendees will include representatives of government, industry, and academia.
