- Description
- The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Contracts Management Office (CMO) issued the Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) Office wide Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) DARPA-BAA-12-64 on 30 August 2012. DARPA-BAA-12-64 solicited for revolutionary research ideas for topics not being addressed by ongoing MTO programs or other published BAA solicitations. Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (hereinafter, "NGAS") submitted Proposal Number SK.A239.000 on 29 July 2014 against DARPA-BAA-12-64. NGAS proposed negotiation of a Cost Plus Fixed Fee (CPFF) contract in the amount of $698,709 with a twelve (12) month period of performance. NGAS proposed a study program to develop novel all-fiber kilowatt technologies (AFKT) for laser coherent beam combination (CBC) and switching. NGAS anticipates this AFKT effort will provide revolutionary capability to field high brightness lasers with low size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP) relevant to fielding on platforms of interest to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), by demonstrating 3-kW class, high coherence, switchable output from single fiber apertures. The proposed AFKT effort will mature technology demonstrated on two recently completed, DARPA-funded programs: Revolution in Fiber Lasers [RIFL], which demonstrated ~3 kW single mode fiber amplifiers, and All Fiber Beam Combiner [AFBC], which demonstrated ~1 kW fiber combiners/switches. Both programs produced record-setting performance which NGAS proposes to develop into components ready for robust product transition through two innovative thrusts.
