Description
Project Details: This project is located in Monterey County, California within Fort Ord National Monument adjacent to State Route 68 (Monterey-Salinas Highway) approximately 6 miles southwest of Salinas. This project consists of the replacement of the existing 125 foot long Guidotti Bridge over El Toro Creek. The existing Guidotti Bridge is an approximately 125 foot long, single lane, 3 span filled concrete spandrel arch structure. The middle arch was constructed in 1908 and two exterior spans constructed in 1911. The bridge site is on Guidotti Road trail, a single lane gravel road, located approximately ¼ mile from Badger Hill Trail head parking lot adjacent to State Route 68. Guidotti Road and other roads and trails within Fort Ord National Monument experience high visitor use including pedestrians, bicyclists, and equestrians. The bridge will be closed to all traffic during construction but adjacent trail access will need to be maintained for visitors. Portions of the existing concrete structure, containing the original stamped bridge dates, are required to be sawcut and salvaged for incorporation into an interpretative display. The proposed single-span bridge superstructure will consist of 4 adjacent prestressed concrete box beams with thin bonded epoxy overlay. The bridge will be founded on eight (8) driven steel H-piles (HP 14x89) extended approximately 50-feet deep into silty sand and sandy silt subsurface materials. A wave-equation analysis completed by an experienced professional engineer will be required prior to approval of pile-driving equipment. During pile driving operations great attention to detail will be required to ensure that the alignment is within ¼ inch per foot and the piles are driven to within 3 inches of the required cutoff location. This project will require approximately 4,100 LB of reinforcing steel (epoxy coated), 25 CUYD of structural concrete, 380 LNFT of driven steel H-piles, 392 LNFT of precast, prestressed concrete box beam, 200 LNFT of 54 inch high, combination steel and concrete bridge railing, 160 SQYD of thin bonded epoxy overlay, 225 CUYD of earthwork, and 300 CUYD of riprap. This project is located within a sensitive location on BLM lands with high public visitation. All construction debris will need to be contained and kept out of the active channel at the bridge site and dewatering will be required for all work within the active channel. Great attention to detail will be required in achieving customer satisfaction in areas of bridge construction, timely completion of work, minimization of impacts to natural resources, and visitor relations.
