The Initiative for Hygiene, Sanitation and Nutrition (IHSAN), a five-year project, is a multi-sectoral, integrated project that focuses on a three-prong approach: (1) improving the delivery of nutrition, hygiene and sanitation specific and sensitive service within the existing systems of Afghanistan, with a particular focus on the public health system's basic package of health services (BPHS); (2) fostering rapid adoption of optimal nutrition hygiene and sanitation behaviors at the household and community levels; and (3) increasing availability of nutrition and sanitation products and services. IHSAN is implemented through a system strengthening approach, utilizing the BPHS and other Afghan system across sectors. IHSAN will closely align with the USAID Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Stragegy and the USAID Water Strategy.
