Description
One page summary of opportunity to collaborate in responding to the DOE Technologist in Residence call for proposals. Background The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (DOE/EERE) recently issued a call for proposals for a pilot program to create Technologist in Residence partnerships between senior technical staff members from National Laboratories (Lab Technologists), and senior technical staff members from a clean energy manufacturing companies or consortia of companies (Industry Technologists). Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking industry partners with whom to respond to this call. Expressions of interest in collaborating on a response to this call are requested by June 17, 2015. Objectives The goal of the TIR pilot is to catalyze strong lab-industry relationships that result in significant high-impact collaborative research and development. In particular, the pilot’s objectives are to · Increase collaborative research and development between National Laboratories and private sector companies; and · Develop a streamlined method for companies to establish long-term relationships with Laboratories that facilitate collaborative research and development. Selected Lab/Industry Technologist teams will work together to understand the manufacturing companies’ priorities and the National Laboratories’ abilities to address these challenges; define scopes of work for future collaborative research; and serve on a DOE Council of Technologists to facilitate broader National Laboratory/ Industry collaboration. ORNL Collaboration Opportunities ORNL is actively engaged in a broad range of EERE-supported clean energy research and development and has specific strengths in Advanced Manufacturing, Building Technologies and Vehicle Technologies. The ORNL Advanced Manufacturing Program is home to the EERE Advanced Manufacturing Office Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), providing industry with facilities, tools and expertise to facilitate rapid deployment of advanced manufacturing technologies. This program is also host to the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility which offers a highly flexible, highly instrumented carbon fiber line for new process development and scale-up. The ORNL Sustainable Transportation Program is home to the National Transportation Research Center, with research activities focused on fuels, engines and emissions, power electronics and electric machines, heavy vehicle safety research, transportation analysis, and high-risk/high-value packaging. The ORNL Building Technology Program hosts the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center, the premier US research facility devoted to the development of technologies that improve the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of residential and commercial buildings. Funding EERE anticipates supporting up to five Lab/Industry Technologist pairs for a period of 18-24 months. Approximately $400,000 per selection will be provided to support part of the Laboratory Technologist’s salary and travel. Cost Share The private sector partner must commit to contribute an amount equal or greater than the anticipated Federal share (e.g. $400,000) to be used for the salary and travel of the Lab Technologist. In addition to this cost match to support the salary and travel of the Lab Technologist, it is anticipated that the industry partner will cover 100% of the Industry Technologist’s salary and expenses.
