- Description
- The USGS, Western Region, Brand of Regional Research, has a requirement for Supermicro equipment for two computational nodes and one disk array to produce climate simulations and store and analyze very large volumes of data that is being generated by the climate models. The Government intends to award this requirement on a limited source basis IAW FAR 12 and 13.106-1 to an authorized reseller of Supermicro equipment. Over the last 5 years, the LAP and the Research Computing Center (RCC), College of Earth, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Oregon State University have worked with hardware and software engineers at Supermicro to conceptualize, design and implement an advanced High Performance Computing (HPC) environment that provides substantial computing capabilities and highly redundant and expandable data storage. A large, continuous and collaborative effort has been put into configuring our existing Supermicro hardware with appropriate hardware and firmware to achieve the full flexibility of the computing environment and data safety that is provided by the Sun/Oracle Solaris operating and Sun/Oracle ZFS file system. The design, implementation and subsequent modifications have resulted in data storage that now comprises five separate storage arrays that store a total of 900 terabytes of raw and processed climate model output. All five ZFS file systems are connected directly with six 4-way, 16-thread Supermicro compute nodes via NFS mounts to provide continuous, uninterrupted write paths to store climate model output. The Government has invested approximately $183,356 in existing computing and file systems that are based exclusively on Supermicro hardware. To avoid costly and likely problems, such as those arising from incompatibility of interconnecting the new compute nodes and storage servers to our existing configurations through the RCC network, lack of common management of firmware and software updates across all systems, and lack of interchangeability of parts, it is essential for the hardware, firmware and software to be 100% compatible with all existing Supermicro hardware now in service. Supermicro hardware and firmware in this application is specialized and no other manufacturer ¿s product can be guaranteed to be 100% compatible with this hardware. The Request for Quotation (RFQ), number G15PS00638, will be made available through the Government-wide Point of Entry (GPE), in accordance with Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) 5.102(a)(1), on or about 24 July 2015. The Government anticipates award of a Firm-Fixed Price type contract. All firms must be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) database at www.sam.gov. Please contact the Contracting Officer, in writing, by email at ccabalsi@usgs.gov, with any questions. FOB Destination: Corvallis, OR 97331. Unrestricted. This notice and any resulting contract or order conforms to the requirements in place through FAC 2005-82, effective 06 June 2015. All questions regarding this procurement shall be in writing, and addressed to Charlan Cabalsi at ccabalsi@usgs.gov no later than 07/28/2015.
