- The Meteorology Department of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is involved in research related to low level cloud/fog and turbulence measurements in the lowest 1 km of the atmosphere to support various basic research topics and topics of high relevance to U.S. Navy. Near-surface measurements (from ground to about 20 m) of these quantities can be obtained from towers over land and from ships or buoys over the ocean. Sampling above 20 m becomes difficult using aforementioned platforms. Although research aircraft can be utilized, sampling becomes unfeasible for fog study due to limited visibility. Thus, it is desirable to obtain a tethered balloon based system to extend measurements above those surface platforms. The purpose of this Statement of Requirements is to acquire a light-weight cloud microphysics probe for use on a tethered balloon.
