- W56HZV15TA398-COMBINED SYNOPSIS SOLICITATION The United States Army Tank and Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren, Michigan has a requirement for the following: A. The United States Army, Center of Military History (CMH) in Ft. Belvoir, VA has a requirement for the following: A-1 World War I United States Army gas mask with canvas case and carrying strap, featuring extensive graffiti including units, names, battles, etc. 35th Division, used by Thomas W. "Sack" Foster. Very good condition. A-2 World War I United States Army gas mask with canvas case and carrying strap, marked "F.B. Slowitzky/ B.B. 315 F.A./A.E.F/I Need Thee Every Hour." Excellent condition. A-3 World War I United States Army pack with the names of American towns and cities written on the canvas of the front pouch. This portion also marked with military designation "US/AC 22,24" in stencil form. Marked the same way on bottom of larger pouch. The number "19" in stamped on inside of pouch cover likely signifying 1919 date of manufacture. One piece of graffiti reads "WE'RE FROM OHIO, YEA, CINCY!" In good condition. A-4 World War I United States Army gas mask with canvas case and carrying strap, marked BOLDLY "I Need Thee Every Hour/H.A. LYNN." Excellent condition. A-5 Spanish-American War United States Army canteen featuring graffiti on both sides. Carried into Cuba by a member of what appears to be the 6th Missouri Volunteers. One side features name of places in Cuba and the other a sorry-looking mule below a side view of an island. Also stenciled with standard large, "U.S." Good condition showing age staining. Unique graffiti artifact. A-6 World War ll pair of light tan canvas leggings, completely covered with graffiti including "1944/U.S.N.A.S. JACKSONVILLE, FLA/BOOT CAMP 8-28 TO 10-10/PLATOON 353." Front side of each completely covered with names of platoon members and their home towns. Individually inscribed by each platoon member. In mint condition. Leggings made 2/23-44 and each stenciled on inside "HOOV-ER, R.H." A-7 Korean War-era United States Army duffle bag used by and so stenciled in white paint along exterior surface-WOODROW D. MORRIS, JR./US52305377/214 LITTLE GRAVES, ST./CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA." Bottom of bag painted by Morris in red, blue and white paint with square "Stars and Bars" flag. Confederate flag. The veteran said he applied the flag image so he could readily find his bag in the hold of his transport ship and bunk area. Very good condition. A-8 World War II canvas private-purchase personal grooming bag with pouches and pockets on the inside. Contains no impliments. Outside has colorful drawing of standing female in bathing suit and wearing a large hat. One hand holds a smoking cigarette in a cigarette holder. At bottom is written on one curved line, "2014 Sgt. Goldthwaite 9133." Very good condition. A-9 World War I United States Army canvas cartridge belt with flaps on each side of front closure marked in dark ink by the user with "ENGLAND" and "FRANCE" respectively. Also the name "Woodley" on another flap. In near mint condition. A-10 Beautiful Spanish-American War sewing kit with small American flag sewn to cover and name inscription. Inside marked in ink "His Mother to Major Jas. A. Frye 1st Mass Hvy Arty U.S.V. War with Spain" along with "Fort Warren Boston Harbor" and "12th June 1898" on either side of drawn flowers. Contains thread and two needles. A-11 Spanish-American War-style 1908-dated United States Army canvas tan-colored pack with regulation large "U.S." stenciled on outside of cover and graffiti-covered inside featuring "M.WALD No 937 170 Co Fort Morgan Ala" and drawing of horse's head with bridle and American eagle over crossed cannons and "1908 Feb. 9." Very good condition. A-12 World War II life belt dated April 18 1944, stamped "DURKEE-ATWOOD CO., MPLS. CONT. NO. W33-092-tc-813." Type worn by soldiers disembarking from troopships or landing craft. Near mint condition. Type worn by American troops landing during D-Day. A-13 World War II inflatable life preserver dated 1944. Type used by Navy and other troops during voyages. This example also stamped "PROPERTY U.S. NAVY." Fine condition. A-14, 14A World War ll Catholic chaplain's communion set consisting of wood storage box with brass cross on top lid. Inside contains two small Communion metal plares, two metal candle holders and small metal drinking cup. Large crucifix is attached (but removable) from inside top lid. Card with "Sick Call Instructions and small package of absorbent cotton held in top lid interior pockets. Very good condition. A-15 World War I American Victory Medal with scarce "TRANSPORT" service bar attached to the medal's ribbon. Near-mint condition. 3.2 Books (B) B-1 United States Army Transport Service Regulations, 1914. Published by Government Printing Office. Hardcovers with 64 pages and index. Plus 13 pages of changes dated 1916 and two 1938 passenger and baggage information booklets. Scarce regulation book. B-2 United States Army Transport Service Regulations, 1899. The title of this rare Army transport service manual is "REGULATIONS Prescribing Flags, Signals, Funnel-Marks, & Also Uniforms OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY TRANSPORTATION SERVICE." Published 1899. Contains 48 pages with plates in full color. Measures 5-1/2" wide by 9-1/2" tall. Very scarce Army transport manual. (no photo provided) 3.3 Helmets and Helmet Covers (H) H-1, 1-A, 1-B, 1-C Vietnam War United States Army helmet featuring graffiti on helmet cover. Name "LAZARUS" at front with peace symbol above; name "SUE" within a heart on side; "F.T.A." on right side forward of a large drawn cross. Complete with liner. Very good condition. H-2, 2A, 2B Vietnam War United States Army helmet featuring graffiti on helmet cover. The names of women were applied to the cover in ballpoint pen, and include "ROSEMARY", "MARY", "LINDA", "BRENDA", "PAT", and more. Cover at front inscribed with "HAVE WAR NO MORE" and "WAR SUCKS." Attached to the helmet cover on left side is a celluloid peace button that reads "DON'T BLAME ME FOR THE MESS WE'RE IN. I VOTED FOR THE PEACE CANDIDATES." Green painted helmet liner with "BRAVE RIFLES" cavalry crest insignia painted on both sides. Very good condition. H-3, 3A Vietnam War United States Army helmet featuring graffiti on helmet cover. Front of cover has small Confederate flag affixed to surface. Above this in felt tip pen marker a large "NAM" and on the back side, also large, the words "GOOK HUNTER." Left side of helmet has the word "HILL," perhaps the soldier's name. Very good condition. H-4, 4A Vietnam War United States Army helmet featuring a large peace symbol covering the helmet's top surface. Drawn with felt tip black ink pen. Chin strap has name "JOHN WAYNE" also inscribed with felt tip pen. Very good condition. H-5, 5A World War I helmet with names of French towns and places painted over its entire surface. The surface was painted silver before the red-lettered place names were applied. Possibly a British helmet. Very good condition. Complete with liner and chin strap. H-6, 6A, 6B, 6C Vietnam era anti-war protester's helmet. The helmet is standard military issue and is without its liner. Exterior surface of helmet painted in colors with anti-war slogans including "STOP WAR", "PEACE", "LOVE" and at the very front the word "Make" over the peace symbol. Good condition, complete with chin strap. H-7 Thirteen (13) Vietnam War United States Army and two (2) Gulf War camouflaged helmet covers each bearing graffiti of various sorts, including names, small drawings, slogans, etc. All in good to very good condition. 3.4 Posters (P) P-1 World War II "Put them across!" poster featuring American soldiers boarding a troop transport. Bottom line reads "THE TOUGHEST JOB IS YET AHEAD!" Measures 28-1/2" wide by 40-1/2" high. Very good condition. Dated 1943. (Official Navy Poster) P-2 World War II "TILL WE MEET AGAIN/BUY WAR BONDS" poster featuring an American soldier waving goodbye from an open troopship porthole. Two sizes of the same identical poster are part of the collection. Both in very good to fine condition. 22" by 28" size, larger size P3 World War II poster showing American soldiers with rifles boarding a troop transport. Copy reads "If you tell where they're going...THEY MAY NEVER GET THERE!" and on bottom, "Don't talk about troop movements!" 22" by 28" Dated 1943. P-4 World War II poster showing a waving American soldier at the railing of a troopship and wearing Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star ribbon bar and European Theatre ribbon with several battle stars. Copy reads "WE MADE IT! How about YOU?" and "OUR VICTORY LOAN QUOTA" column with numbers designating how much money was raised. For use in places of business, including manufacturing plants. Dated 1945. Very good condition. 18- 1/2" by 26". P-5 World War II 1943-dated poster showing American soldiers boarding a troop train that would take them to their troopship. Copy reads "If you tell where they're going...They may never get there/DON'T TALK ABOUT TROOP MOVEMENTS". 22" wide by 28" high. Very good condition. P-6 World War II 1943-dated poster showing hundreds of American soldiers debarding from a troop train. They wear overseas caps and many are carrying packs. Bold text reads "Milliona of troops are on the move...Is YOUR trip necessary?" Published by Office of Defense Transportation. 22" wide by 28" high. Very good condition. P-7 World War II 1943-dated poster showing an enemy hand wearing a Swastika ring putting a puzzle piece imprinted with word "England" into a puzzle marked "Convoy sails for...tonight." Copy reads ‘BITS OF CARELESS TALK ARE PIECED TOGETHER BY THE ENEMY." 14" wide by 20" high. Excellent condition. P-8 Vietnam War era poster showing the head and upper body of a uniformed and helmeted American soldier holding an M-16 rifle. Headline at top reads "YOUR PACIFIC TEAM," and at bottom, "U.S. ARMY, PACIFIC". Also features insignia of various commands. 15-1/2" wide by 23" tall. Mint condition. 3.5 Photographs (PHO) PHO-1 "Yard-Long" photograph of USS Buford with A.E.F. World War I returning troops taken at Newport News, Virginia on June 14th, 1919. Excellent condition. Measures 7" tall by 36" long. PHO-2 World War I large format photograph showing the USS Floridian passing the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Returning Army soldiers line the railing. Very good condition. PHO-3 Stereo card photographs depicting Spanish-American War and World War I troopships and the soldiers who sailed on them. Even stereo cards of Teddy Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" are included in the collection, each in very good to fine condition. There are a total of 43 stereo cards. $700 PHO-4 Collection of World War II glossy black and white photographs, varying sizes from snapshot to post card to 8" by 10" showing troopships and life on them by soldiers going to and coming from war. The collection totals just over 200 photographs. PHO-4A World War II bound photo book compiled at Hampton Roads (Virginia) Port of Embarkation and titled "THE ODYSSEY OF AN AMERICAN SOLDIER." The foreword is by the embarkation port's commanding officer, Brig. Gen. J.R. Kilpatrick, who wrote in part, "We have recorded the journey of one such soldier: from troop train to staging area-to the pier and the transport-the voyage and his arrival at an overseas destination. His experiences are those of all soldiers. They are the same for your soldier...wherever he went, wherever he is going, on the big trip, the voyage to victory." There are a total of 33 ORIGINAL black and white prints, each linen-backed, contained in the book's hard covers. Again, these are actual photograph prints. Each has a full typewritten caption on the back of the previous page explaining in detail the subject of each picture. The last page has the following typewritten explanation: "The foregoing photographs, with the exception of 1-A, which was taken by the Signal photo laboratory in Chicago, Illinois, of the Army Service Forces, Sixth Service Command, were taken by the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation, Newport News, Virginia, Third Service Command. In fine condition and quite rare. 3.6 Letters (PR) PR-1 Group of 20 Civil War Union soldier letters each written from a transport to family and friends at home. A variety of soldiers represented. Various state military units represented and a variety of subjects discussed. Includes insights and comments about the voyages, the writer's longing for home, and what they expect to encounter once they disembark. Most of the troops were leaving northern ports and being transported south to face Confederate forces. All in excellent condition with some mailing envelopes included. Written in pen as well as pencil. Collectively, they provide a excellent glimpse of what it was like to be transported by ship during the Civil War. PR-2 Historic Civil War diary-letter written by Colonel Clark Edwards of the 5th Maine Regiment. Contains 24 pages with daily account of voyage from Camp Franklin (Washington, DC area) April 17, 1862 and the journey south aboard a troop transport. The account is very detailed and captures life aboard a transport during the American Civil War. The service record of the regiment is-Camp at Meridian Hill, Washington, D.C. until July 16, 1861. PR-3, 3-A Two World War II Yank magazines showing returning American soldiers on troopships on each cover, and a Spanish-American War Harper's Weekly (1898) showing on its cover the "S.S. City of Peking" carrying soldiers from the Wharf in San Francisco. 3.7 Artwork (PTG) PTG-1 Oil painting on canvas of United States Army soldier Denzell Ray. Mills, in uniform. Brass plaque attached to frame indicates the 18-year-old soldier, born in 1948, was killed in Vietnam in 1967 while a member of the 25th Infantry Division. His death is recorded as having taken place in Binh Duong Province. Information on the Wall site indicates he "died while missing, ground casualty, other causes." Painting signed by Ruth Seifert. Measures (in frame) 22-1/2" wide by 26-1/2" high. Very good condition. PTG-2 Embroidered silk commemoration of a passenger or crew member aboard the United States Army Transport Logan during the Philippine Insurrection. Top embroidered with "IN REMEMBRANCE OF MY CRUISE IN PHILIPPINES. The army transport Logan is even depicted in stitches within an oval at the bottom. The was built in 1892 and named Manitoba but was sold to the Army in 1898 and re-named Logan. In January, 1904, the Army's 27th Infantry Regiment, the "Wolfhounds," boarded the Logan in the Philippines and sailed to the United States with stops in Nagasaki and Honolulu. In January the same regiment embarked on the ship for Manila, arriving in March. Frame size measures 19-1/4" wide by 25-1/4" high. 3.8 Uniforms (U) U-1 & U-1A World War I troop transport USS George Washington complete crew members uniform consisting of jumper, trousers, and "Donald Duck" style hat with "U.S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON" metallic thread-embroidered ship's name tally, and large neckerchief. Inside hat are the written initials "F.R.F." Inside jumper bottom lining stenciled in fading white paint with name "F.R. FROHL." Same name stenciled inside bell-bottom trousers. The USS George Washington was a captured German ship that was put into service by the United States government as a troop transport. Accompanied by 1919 published book, "The Hatchet of the U.S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON," containing reproduced copies of the ship's newspaper, along with a short history of the vessel. In addition, a photograph of Woodrow Wilson with an inscription thanking the officers, crew and Marines attached to the ship. This is a reproduced photo with reproduced inscription, probably given to crew members. Woodrow Wilson was a passenger on the ship in December, 1014. All uniform components, book and Wilson photograph, in very good condition. U-2, U-2A World War I "U.S.S. DE KALB" hat with metallic thread-embroidered hat tally. Name of original owner, "W. G. Rowland," stenciled on inside center and written in ink on leather sweat band. The transport De Kalb carried the first American troops to Europe during World War I. U-3 &U-3A World War I "U.S.S. LEVIATHAN" hat with metallic thread-embroidered hat tally. Name of original owner, "J.P. STIERLY" written in ink in two places on leather sweat band. The Leviathan was one of the largest vessels impounded at the start of World War I and when put in transport service could carry 10,000 troops. Accompanied by framed period photograph of the ship with American soldiers returning from the war in Europe. Overall size is 13-1/2" high by 20-1/2" long. U-4 World War II US Merchant Service crew member's jumper with insignia. Original owner's name, appears to be "Field", stenciled lightly in white paint on inside bottom edge in two places. This jumper is unique in that the left side is zippered. During World War II many of the vessels carrying American troops were crewed by members of the US Merchant Service. In fine condition. Offeror shall include all shipping charges and deliver supplies F.O.B. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed contract based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received will normally be considered solely for the purpose of determining wheather to conduct a competitive procurement.
