- Description
- Design, construct and install shelving and bins, 0040246619 1. The following questions have been submitted by potential contractors on the subject solicitation. Please use the answers to formulate your response. Q. Under Work Requirements 1. "Each bank or bay shall have 3 cross pieces to support the cores." Under Work Requirements 2. At a minimum shelf's shall duplicate those at the other facilities. Pictures of existing core shelf's show 1 cross member between the front and back frame members. Question 1. Does the 3 cross members include the front and back members or is there to be 3 cross members plus the front and back frame members? A.The shelves have three cross members per individual shelf. That includes the front and back cross member. We do not require three cross members in addition to the front and back. That would be nice but I suspect the costs of the materials would drive the cost of this project through the roof. As a matter of clarification, the three cross members are stipulated so that the 5' long cores are supported at the ends of each core as well as in the middle. One person in the past when we constructed these ourselves in the late 1970's, wanted to use two cross members only because they felt the cores were rigid enough to support themselves. But in building a test set of shelves back in 1989 after an earthquake (Loma Prieta 1989) we saw three issues: (a) the cores did sag in the middle where they were unsupported; (b) when there are only two cross members supporting the ends of the core wasn't line up properly it could fall off one cross member and onto the shelf below it, damaging the cores; and finally (c) we live in earthquake country and the extra middle support cross member adds to stability. In 1989 after the Loma Prieta earthquake, which shook our region catastrophically, one of our repositories with shelves that had only two cross members failed. One of the local USGS structural engineers told us to use three cross member for increased stability. These are extremely expensive cores to collect and preserve. Hence, we need to preserve them for our research and require the design I show in the photos. 1. Do you require a special finish on the strut(green, galv, plain steel, Stainless) Minimally we require a galvanized finish. The cores are collected in salt water environments and heck they do leak and we want some protection. Plus they are stored in a cold moist walk-in cold room and again galvanized is a minimal requirement. Note that the photos show mostly galvanized strut material. 2. Is there a certain type(length, diam.) of anchor bolt you require. I can't remember how long the anchor bolts are and their diameter. I will see if I can find some to measure when I get to Menlo Park (later this week or early next week). If recollection serves me they are 1/2"-5/8"diameter and about 5" long. We used the size recommended but he B-line or Unistrut representative recommended for 10' high shelving. These are critical to structure stability. 3.Re: drawings. are your measurements from center, outside, or inside of strut. Struts are 1-5/8" wide They are the dimension for the specific gauge of strut I requested (I believe 12 ga). Hence the outside to outside dimension = 1-5/8" wide. 2. There is no change in the closing date of the solicitation. 3. The time for the site visit is 10:00 AM. 4. The last day to submit questions regarding this solicitation is 21 Dec 2015. 5. All other terms and conditions remain the same.
