Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) seeks information on commercial vendors that are capable of providing a CW laser sum-frequency generation system able to produce single-frequency, tunable laser light at a wavelength of 323 nm. The laser light from this system will be used as a first step in the photoionization of cold lithium atoms as part of a cold atom ion source. This ion source is being built by NIST's Center for Nanoscale Science and technology (CNST) as a modification to a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIBSEM) system in order to realize a high brightness nanometer-scale focused ion beam of lithium ions. This beam will be used for research on lithium ion battery materials as part of CNST's mission to develop new nanoscale measurement capabilities in support of users in the user facility. The laser sum-frequency generation system will be used to mix laser light from an existing M Squared Lasers SolsTiS laser system owned by NIST, which provides up to 4 W of CW, tunable, single frequency laser light at 825 nm, with single-frequency 532 nm light provided by a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser. This 532 nm laser light can originate either from (1) an existing, NIST-owned Coherent, Inc. model V10 DPSS laser, which provides 10 W of CW, single-frequency laser light, or (2) as a split-off portion of the 18 W single-frequency DPSS laser light (Coherent, Inc model V18) currently used to pump the M Squared SolsTiS laser. Vendors are encouraged to recommend the approach they believe will give the best performance. In the case of the second option, the system shall include all modifications to the existing Coherent V18 plus M Squared SolsTiS system necessary to provide the split-off beam. The sum-frequency generation system shall consist of a monolithic optical build-up cavity for the 825 nm light with an intracavity nonlinear mixing crystal such as BBO, and a mechanism for introducing the 532 nm light into the beam path through the crystal, such that the two laser beams can mix and generate the required 323 nm light. The cavity shall be electronically stabilized and locked to the single frequency 825 nm light, and the system shall include all necessary electronic controls to maintain a stable output. Salient specifications that will be required of this system are as follows: 1. Optical power output at 323 nm shall be at least 50 mW 2. Sum-frequency light shall be continuously scannable over a range of at least 30 GHz, and the cavity shall be able to follow any scan speed produced by the 825 nm input laser without losing lock. 3. System shall operate at any output wavelength in a range from 323.0 nm or less to 323.6 nm or more (vacuum wavelength), as selected by tuning the 825 nm input laser. 4. Output beam shall be TEM00 with M2 < 1.2 5. System shall be fully compatible with and optimized for operation with the existing NIST-owned equipment. To enable full optimization of the system, NIST will provide, upon request, detailed measurements of beam power and mode characteristics of the existing NIST-owned systems. NIST is seeking responses from all responsible sources, including large, foreign, and small businesses. Small businesses are defined under the associated NAICS code for this effort, 334516, as those domestic sources having 500 employees or less. Please include your company's size classification and socio-economic status in any response to this notice. Companies that manufacture laser sum-frequency generation systems are requested to email a detailed report describing their abilities to Lynda.Roark@nist.gov no later than the response date for this sources sought notice. The report should include achievable specifications and any other information relevant to your product or capabilities. Also, the following information is requested to be provided as part of the response to this sources sought notice: 1. Name of the company that manufactures the system components for which specifications are provided. 2. Name of company(s) that are authorized to sell the system components, their addresses, and a point of contact for the company (name, phone number, fax number and email address). 3. Indication of number of days, after receipt of order that is typical for delivery of such systems. 4. Indication of whether each instrument for which specifications are sent to Lynda.Roark@nist.gov are currently on one or more GSA Federal Supply Schedule contracts and, if so, the GSA FSS contract number(s). 5. Any other relevant information that is not listed above which the Government should consider in developing its minimum specifications and finalizing its market research. Point of Contact Lynda Roark, Contracting Officer, Phone (301) 975-3725, Fax (301) 975-8753, Email Lynda.Roark@Nist.gov
