- Description
- Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) seeks industry partners to bring active authentication technologies developed by Sandia to market readiness and deploy. Numerous applications could take advantage of these technologies. Examples include but are not limited to (1) digital cash using a mobile phone, (2) secured smart home (appliances, alarms & sensors), (3) unspoofable drone Command & Control, (4) smart meters, (5) multi-factor authentication, (6) active authentication, (7) Internet of Things (IoT) authentication,(6) secure Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for auto industry or (7) point of sales systems. Description of Technology: Digital identity theft has compromised millions of accounts emphasizing the security issues of using clonable static information. Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) in digital IDs have been explored by many research institutions in an attempt to increase security. PUFs can be used to create encryption keys, generate random numbers, or authenticate devices. While the concept of PUF shows promise, current implementations are inherently problematic: inconsistent behavior, expensive, susceptible to modeling attacks, and permanent. To overcome those challenges, an unclonable, dynamic digital identity is created between two communication endpoints such as mobile devices. This Quasi-Physically Unclonable Digital ID (Q-PUDID) is created by injecting unreplicable data scrambling physical medium at the data origin point and creating a corresponding device specific descrambler/software to authenticate the device. This data scrambling device is designed using macroscopic, intentional anomalies making Q-PUDIDs inexpensive to generate. Q-PUDID is resistant to cryptanalysis due to the integrity and assurance mechanism used to authenticate instead of the traditional confidentiality (or encryption) functions. PUDID is unique in that it combines the unique device identity with a dynamic human identity creating a true two-factor authentication. A novel technique utilized in Q-PUDID solution: dynamic data is uniquely processed by the Q-PUDID device generating an identity signature that is ephemeral, meaningful only to the intended recipient. Sandia seeks to transfer technology for the benefit of the United States industry. Qualified partners will contribute resources including in-kind support in the form of laboratory staff and instrumentation. Partners will have the option to obtain up to and including an exclusive license to Sandia's CRADA-generated intellectual property. Sandia will evaluate responses and select prospective parties with which to engage in further discussions based on the following criteria, pursuant to Sandia's technology transfer mission: 1.What are the respondent's specific experience, expertise, and capabilities in research and development, testing, implementation, maintenance and support relative to utility software? 2.What are the respondent's experience, expertise, and capabilities relative to software and hardware distribution? 3.How will the respondent deploy the technology for the benefit of national security and the US public good? 4.How will the respondent's deployment of the technology benefit US economic competitiveness? It is desired that the respondent have cryptographic module/hardware experience and background knowledge of authentication. As a full cost recovery laboratory, Sandia will consider funds-in options to perform the work; such funds can be negotiated between Sandia and interested respondents. Sandia National Laboratories is a multiprogram laboratory managed and operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under Contract DE-AC04-94AL85000. SAND# 2015-5057 W Instructions to Responders Interested parties that meet the criteria outlined above are invited to respond to this opportunity announcement. To express interest and to obtain information regarding the CRADA opportunity, please contact Dr. Peter S. Choi via email at schoi@sandia.gov, phone (505) 263-2653.
