Description
Over the past several months the Emergency Department has faced scrutiny from many regulatory bodies and the community for their triage practices. Under the recommendation of the OMI, Education Service purchased ESI (Emergency Severity Index) training for all ED nurses. ESI is one component of the assessment skills needed to appropriately triage patients. Despite this training, the ED is still experiencing criticism of their triage practices. The Emergency Nurses Association is the professional organization for emergency nurses. They set the standard of practice for emergency nursing. According to Carolyn Buppert, MSN JD, "if you perform triage and a patient suffers injury and the hospital is sued, the standard of care for preparation of triage nurses would be judged by ENA standards, among other things." All other triage education programs look to the ENA standards and guidelines to develop their training. We looked at training from Triage First, The Sullivan Group, and the ENA. We are currently using the ESI training. The ENA uses the Elsevier platform to deliver their training. We also use Elsevier for our Mosby's Consult and Mosby's Procedures so it is familiar to the staff. The ENA training was recommended by the Nurse Manager, the ED Educator, and a former ED Nurse Manager as the standard for training ED Nurses. Instead of purchasing individual seats, ENA has unlimited access for as many staff as we want, for one year. Other health care systems are using the program. Honor Health Care uses the ENA program for their emergency nurses. Banner has their own program based on ENA standards. It was purchased by VISN 2 three years ago and the Durham VA continues its use for their emergency nurses. The ED Educator at the Durham thinks the ENA content is excellent. Durham does not recommend putting it TMS as it took three months to accomplish. The link provided by Elsevier is the best way to deliver the education. The content of the ENA course was created by the developers of the ESI and expert emergency physicians and nurses. It is based on current evidence and comes from the organization that sets the standards for emergency care. The content and delivery from other programs is good however it is my recommendation that we use the ENA triage training for our ED nurses to alleviate any doubt that they are receive the best training available for their specialty. This is a standalone training software request. The data and records will be maintained by the local administrator. It will be identical to what we can do with the Mosby's Procedures on our web page (this was a National purchase). We do not individually enter employees into our Mosby's (also an Elsevier company) but we have the capability to do so. We have the ability to place learner in the system and assign training. It does not interface with TMS although we can record it as complete in TMS as an outside course. We can make the usre name whatever we want in the system and there will be no personal identifiers such as Social Secutiy Numbers or birth dates in the system.
