Description

OPNAV sponsored research has been initiated between the NPS Department of Oceanography and the Center for Autonomous Vehicle Research for localizing the position of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) through acoustic ranging from an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) with GPS. This permits the UUV to stay underwater longer and increases mission effectiveness. The emphasis is on a single pair of transponders “ one mounted on the USV and one on the UUV such that the signal passed between the vehicles can be used for range and bearing and update the position of the UUV. The OEM equipment must be able to be incorporated into the UUV and USV form factor and power specifications.
