The Contractor and manufacturer (if different) shall conform to the requirements on the FIO drawings and the referenced standards. If a conflict exists between the drawings and the standards, the more stringent shall apply. 5.1 General The Contractor shall furnish 36 (2 sets of 18 each), 1-inch diameter wire ropes with sockets at both ends as specified herein. Each wire rope shall be of 88'-3" +/- 1" in length as indicated on the FIO drawings. The wire rope shall be domestically manufactured and individually coiled; splicing will not be allowed. All wire rope pieces shall be cut from a common master run to ensure maximum uniformity of manufacture. 5.2 Type of Wire Rope The Contractor shall submit product data showing the type of wire rope along with the Wire Material Certification. The wire rope shall be of the following type: a. Strand configuration: Type IV, Class 3, Construction 2, flattened strand, 6 x 30 style G b. Lay: right, lang c. Diameter: one (1) inch, with a tolerance of - 0 and plus 5 percent. d. Finish: plain/bright/uncoated e. Material: AISI 304 stainless f. Core type: independent wire rope core g. Pre-formed: yes h. Nominal strength: 54.4 tons/108,800 lb 5.3 Pre-Stretching The Contractor or wire rope manufacturer shall pre-stretch the wire ropes before attaching the sockets in accordance with the requirements of FS RR-W-410. This shall be done by subjecting them to three (3) cycles at 40 percent of its nominal strength. The 40 percent loads shall be held for 5 minutes with 5 percent loads for 5 minutes between cycles. 5.4 Wire Strength and Ductility The manufacturer shall perform testing in accordance with FS RR-W-410 to verify wire strength and ductility. The Contractor shall submit Wire Strength and Ductility Test Results. 5.5 Pre-Forming The wire rope shall be pre-formed, and the manufacturer shall perform testing in accordance with FS RR-W-410 to verify pre-forming. The Contractor shall submit Pre-Forming Test Results. 5.6 Stress Relief The wire rope shall be stress relieved, and the manufacturer shall perform testing in accordance with FS RR-W-410 to verify stress relief. The Contractor shall submit Stress Relief Test Results. 5.7 Weld Distribution Wire joints in any strand shall not be closer than 18 inches in any strand. 5.8 Pitch Length Strand pitch length shall not be less than 4-1/2 times the nominal rope diameter. 5.9 Core Strand Wires The number of wires in the core strand shall be equal to or greater than the number of wires in the other strands. The wires shall be of the same material as the wires in the other strands, or of a material with a lower tensile strength. 5.10 Tension Testing A tension test shall be performed to verify the wire rope meets the accepted industry standards for nominal strength. Two (2) rope samples shall be tested to failure to ensure the expected performance level has been met. The test shall be performed using suitable tension testing equipment and by qualified personnel, both furnished by the Contractor. The rope samples shall be cut to no less than 3 feet in length. The test will not be considered valid if the failure occurs less than 2 inches from either socket. Relative speed between the machine heads shall not exceed 1 inch per minute. The Contractor shall submit a Rope Tension Test Report with the test results as well as a copy of the Rope Tension Testing Device certification of calibration and standards compliance. At its discretion, the government may send Contracting Officer Representatives to the test facility. End terminations shall be in proper alignment along the centerline marking of the wire rope. The wire rope sockets and attachment of the wire rope shall develop the full strength of the wire rope assembly. Kinking of wire rope will be cause for rejection. Submit fabrication drawings of the end termination as specified. The wire rope end terminations (sockets) shall be fabricated as indicated on the FIO drawings, and shall be cast from stainless steel conforming to ASTM A351/A351M CF8M. 5.12 Attaching and Proof Loading Terminations After pre-stretching the wire rope and attaching the sockets, the wire rope assemblies shall be proof loaded at 40 percent of nominal strength of the rope. Length of the wire ropes shall be measured to the nearest 0.01 inch. The Contractor shall submit the results of a Proof Load of Terminations Test, which shall also include the final measured lengths of all 36 wire rope assemblies, including all pertinent dimensions of individual components. 6.0 HANDLING, STORAGE, AND DELIVERY The wire ropes shall be coiled in the same direction as they were bent during manufacturing. The coils shall be covered for protection from rain, snow and road spatter during shipping. Wire ropes shall be packaged in a manner acceptable to the common freight carrier that will ensure safe delivery at the Project site in a satisfactory condition at the lowest applicable rate. Upon shipment to the Project site, the wire ropes and end terminations shall be inspected in the presence of the Contracting Officer Representative. In particular, the wire rope shall be inspected for diameter, dings, kinks or other damage and the proper lengths. The wire ropes shall be uncoiled and laid straight in order to allow complete inspection of the wire ropes over their entire length. The Government will assist the Contractor in performing the unreeling/reeling operation, by providing a fork lift or mobile crane and an operator. The Contractor shall be responsible for providing all other equipment required to complete the inspection. Within 3 calendars days of completion of the on-site inspection, the Contractor shall furnish the Contracting Officer with a written report of the Inspection Results clearly showing acceptance or non-acceptance of the new wire rope assemblies.
