Rehabilitate Water Systems for Emergency and Potable Water Supply in East Potomac Park, Washington DC NAICS 237110 Construction services estimated to be between $1,000,000 and $5,000,000. Location East Potomac Park, Washington D.C. Background The majority of water distribution mains and isolation valves within East Potomac Park were installed in the early 1900's during infill and seawall construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers & War Department. Numerous repairs, water main extensions and valve installations have taken place since transfer of the land, structures and utilities from the Corps of Engineers to the NPS (ca.1948). Since that transfer, additional development and park amenities have increased demand for water while conversely, available flow and relative pressures have decreased. The existing East Potomac Park water distribution system derives water from two adjacent 8-inch connections to a 12-inch DC water main located at the intersection of Maine Avenue SW and Ohio Dr. SW. From the Maine Avenue connection, the two 8-inch mains run parallel through meter vaults and continue beneath the Ohio Dr. bridge. After the bridge, the parallel 8-inch water lines join and continue as a 12-inch water main that completes a loop that serves the East Potomac Park area. Description This project will construct approximately 5,200 linear feet of 12-inch diameter water main originating at the Maine Avenue point of connection to DC Water and continue to the soon to be constructed new Park Headquarters building to be located near the southwestern extent of Buckeye Dr. SW. The existing 8-inch parallel connections will be upsized to 12-inch connections and will generally follow the same alignment of the old 8-inch lines. Prior to the Ohio Dr. bridge crossing, each 12-inch line will be outfitted with a new meter and backflow preventer in corresponding new precast vaults. The parallel lines will cross the Ohio Dr. bridge and merge into a single 12-inch water line where the alignment turns 90 degrees to follow Ohio Dr. SW to the intersection with Buckeye Dr. SW. From the Buckeye Dr. SW intersection, the alignment continues in a southwesterly direction to the site of the new Park Headquarters Building. This project will also replace approximately 650 linear feet of smaller diameter (6-8 inch) water mains at critical points of connection along with incidental hydrants and valves. It is anticipated that water mains will be primarily installed via horizontal directional drilling (HDD) methods except where open trenching offers obvious advantages.
